Documentary filmmaking is a powerful medium that allows us to explore the world through a lens of truth and storytelling. As I reflect on my journey, I realize how much this art form has shaped my understanding about this world. From the initial spark of inspiration to the final cut, every step of the process has been a learning experience. In this post, I will share insights from my journey to this first mini-documentary, the challenges I faced, and the lessons I learned along the way.
The Spark of Inspiration
Every filmmaker has a moment that ignites their passion. For me, it was a documentary I watched 10 years ago, when I was 5, about Chinese archaeologists. The raw emotion and authenticity captured on screen resonated deeply with me. I realized that documentaries have the power to inform, inspire, and provoke thought. This realization pushed me to film mini-documentaries for topics and social questions that I care, and most importantly, to tell stories that the majority does not know.
Finding My Topic
In the early stages of creating this documentary, I struggle to write a plot that I truly cares. I experimented with various styles and topics, but all fail because of various reasons. However, each topic is a explore on my interest, which will eventually lead to the topic presented now. I discovered that my passion lies in telling stories that highlight social issues and human connections with this grotto. This clarity helped me focus my efforts and develop a more cohesive body of work.
The Learning Curve
Filmmaking is not just about creativity; it also involves technical skills. Throughout this documentary, I experience multiple challenges. Here are some key lessons I learned:
Plot Writing
A good plot is crucial for any filmmaker. I spent countless hours on refining my plot. I remember my first plot was about 4000 chinese character, which is far too long for a 15min mini-documentary. However, through 4 times of editing and guidance from my teachers, I cut the plot into 200 words but still express the ideas that I aimed to express.
The Importance of Interviews
A successful documentary relies heavily on interviews. I spend time planing out the questions, however, all interviews did not go exactly the same as planned. For example, most people did not want to be filmed but were open to audio recording. I conducted interviews toward about 20 different people from different industries. This experience not only enriched my film but also deepened my understanding of connection between cultural heritage and local people.
Organize the clips
After the trip to Dunhuang last summer, I had about 4 hours of video footage that could be used inside the documentary. However, I am not the one who do all these editing for the documentary. I was only providing the plot and feedback after I receive the video draft. Therefore, I need to organize these clips and make it easy for someone else to find. I also need to clarify in my plot where and when to use these videos.
Help from Teachers
Special thanks to my teachers, who supported and direct me throughout the process. They provide useful feedbacks, editing help, and most importantly emotional support.
The Impact of Documentary Filmmaking
As I reflect on my filming journey, I realize that documentary filmmaking has profoundly impacted my perspective on the world. It has taught me to be more observant, empathetic, and critical of the narratives we encounter daily. Here are some ways documentary filmmaking has influenced me:
Raising Awareness
Through my film, I aimed to raise awareness about these hidden stories or connections. I learned that documentaries can serve as powerful tools for advocacy.
Connecting with Audiences
Documentaries have the ability to connect with audiences on a personal level. I discovered that sharing authentic stories can foster empathy and understanding. During screenings of my films, I witnessed how the interviewees reacted emotionally to the subjects portrayed. This connection is what drives me to continue creating impactful documentaries.
Looking Ahead
As the journey continued, I am excited about the future of my filmmaking journey. I plan to continue exploring social issues through documentaries and honing my craft. Here are some goals I have set for myself:
